Redhawks win series versus Pinewoods
Aug 2, 2004
The Onondaga Redhawks are in the Can-Am Championships for the fourth year in a row with a 10-8 road victory over the Pinewoods Smoke.
The first period saw both defenses start strong. Pinewoods beat goal-tender Jim Campbell 8 minutes into the game to record the first goal of the game. Then Onondaga Redhawk veteran Kevin Powless tied the score. It looked as though the two teams would go into the locker room tied. But in the final 2 minutes of the first period, the energized Smoke netted 3 goals to take a 4-1 lead.
The second period saw both defenses take control again as both teams were only able to add a goal a piece. Leading 5 to 2, the Smoke had momentum on their side and was looking to force a decisive game 5 at Onondaga.
The opening minute of the third period saw the Smoke extend their lead to 6 to 2. Then goal-tender Jim Campbell shut down the Pinewoods attack for 10 minutes. That allowed AJ Bucktooth to lead the Redhawk attack and the Onondaga cheered as the visitors scored 6 straight goals to take an 8-6 lead. Pinewoods then closed the gap to 8-7 only to see AJ Bucktooth add another goal. Fighting to keep the series alive, the Smoke again closed the gap to one goal at 8-9. Then Craig Marvin then sealed the win with a goal to close out the scoring.
Coach Jacques was very proud of the team in winning a tough series on the road with only 6 penalty minutes. The old goal-tender was especially proud of Jim Campbell performing so well in facing 89 Pinewoods Shots. Leading the Redhawk attack was AJ Bucktooth (4-0), Murray Stout (0-4), Ryan Lewis (0-3), Kevin Powless (2-1), Ron Cogan (1-2), Dustin Hill (1-1), Robert Shenandoah (1-0), Craig Marvin (1-0), and Jim Campbell (0-1).

Redhawks drop thriller to Niagara
May 24, 2004
This past Sunday, the Niagara hawks came to Tsha’Hon’nonyendakwha to battle the Redhawks who were riding a three game win streak. Niagara was able to snap the streak with an 11-10 overtime thriller scoring the winning goal with only 3.4 seconds to play.
The two teams who always seem to put on fabulous games for the crowd in the past did not disappoint the fans. The first period saw both teams jump out of the gate early. Both squads appeared fresh and were extending the break challenging the goal tenders. Onondaga was able to post four goals by Eric Carlsen, Ed Shenandoah, Ed Shenandoah again, and Kevin Powless matching the 4 Niagara goals.
The second period saw both goalies put their foot down to this excessive scoring. Again goal-tender Jim Campbell was put under the gun with multiple man-down situations and only allowing a single goal. Not wanting to be outdone, the Niagara goaltender was also stopping all Redhawk attempts himself. Only a goal by Clayton Jones off of a feed by Peter Benedict was able to penetrate the Niagara defense to tie the game at 5.
The third period saw Niagara again on the attack with two quick goals. After a Redhawks goal by Kevin Powless, the Niagara fast break allowed the Hawks to storm out to a 8-6 lead late in the third period. The Redhawks then were able to draw within one on the power play with a blast by Peter Benedict. Kevin Powless was able to notch a hat trick to tie the game at 8. After a loose ball scrabble, the Niagara hawks were able to double team the Redhawk ball carrier and force a loose ball and a fast break of their own to take a 9-8 lead. Then a minute later, the Redhawks pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker. After a pipe shot and a save by the Niagara goal-tender, Kevin Powless was able to fire through a screen to tie the game at 9 with 21 seconds on the clock to send it to overtime.
The 10 minute overtime period was much like the third. The Niagara Hawks surged ahead with two goals and had a 10-8 lead with only 4 minutes remaining. Again the Redhawks looked to veteran forward Kevin Powless score his fifth goal of the evening off of a feed from Dustin Hill. Then 20 seconds later, Eric Carlsen took the ball from the left side and beat his man and the goal tender to knot up the game at 10 with 3 minutes to play. After solid scoring chances on both sides, Niagara was awarded the ball with 8 seconds to play at half court. Niagara was able to get the ball down low when the Niagara attacker was able to score the winning goal with 3.4 seconds to play.
The 3 and 2 Redhawks were lead by Ed Shenandoah (2-5), Kevin Powless (5-1), Peter Benedict (1-2), Eric Carlsen (2-0), Clayton Jones (1-1), Ryan Lewis (0-2), Dustin Hill (0-2), Murray Stout (0-1) and Ben Hunt (0-1). Up next is a home game against western division leader Six Nations.
