The 2010 Nations Cup concluded Sunday at Tsha honnonyendakwha by crowing the Ohswekan Aces as champions. The Ohswekan Aces defeated the Frog Pond Maulers 12 to 9 in an exciting game as they finished the tournament undefeated.
The Maulers opened up the scoring and were able to beat the Aces goaltender. A first period highlight was Frog Pond forward Kim Squire taking the outlet from his goalie, running the length of the floor and throwing a round the world shot past the sprawling keeper for a 3 to 1 lead. In the second period, the intensity began to rise and so did the play of the Aces Randy Staats and Jody Jamieson. Together they seemed to take turns running the offense and creating opportunities for teammates. With the game tied at 9 in the third period, the Aces defense tightened as the Aces were able to score 3 more goals to be crown 2010 Nation Cup Champions.
In earlier action, The Seneca 32’s earned the Bronze medal by defeating the home town Redhawks 12 to 9. The game was close throughout with Redhawks Neal Powless, Wade Bucktooth, Dave Stout, and Gewas Schindler carrying the offensive load for the team. With neither team holding more than a one goal lead through the first two periods, it came down to the decisive third period to determine the Bronze medal winner. That proved to be the Seneca 32’s. The 32’s broke open a 7 all tie by scoring four straight goals on their way to the win.
Editor’s Note: Just would like to say Nya’wenha to all of the players, coaches, managers, fans, the Onondaga Nation, and especially the arena staff for putting on a great Nations Cup.
Nyawenha to both the Maulers and Aces for supporting the Onondaga Minor Champions before the game with high fives before the Championship game. That was great!
