Saturday night the Onondaga Redhawks hosted the Newtown Golden Eagles in Game 2 of the 2013 Can-Am Finals. Newtown held on to an exciting 11-9 win to even the series at a game apiece.
Newtown entered tonight’s game looking to even the series after the Redhawks took game 1 with a 15-14 overtime win. The first place Eagles also retuned their defense to stopping Redhawk All-Star Brett Bucktooth. With the Brett Bucktooth taken out of the Redhawk offense, AJ Bucktooth, Wade Bucktooth and Dave Stout led the offense in the first period with tallies but Newtown tallied 1 more for a 4-3 first period lead.
Lee Nanticoke started the second period with a beautiful tally of his own to tie the game at 4. But the visiting Eagles responded with solid goaltending play and not allowing the Redhawks to score for the rest of the period. With the Redhawk offense having difficulty finding the back of the net, the visitors scored 4 of their own including a length of the floor bounce shot that found an empty Redhawk net with .04 seconds remaining as the Redhawks pulled the goalie for an extra attacker.
The third period saw the visiting Newtown Golden Eagles holding 8 to 4 lead when the visitors added one more goal before goaltender Ross Bucktooth began stopping all Newtown attempts. With 9 minutes remaining and the home team turned up the heat scoring 4 goals in 3 minutes to close within 1 with six minutes to play and including a beautiful goal by Dave Stout electrifying the crowd. Unfortunately the Redhawk momentum was halted with a minor high stick and major roughing penalty resulting that the home team would be man down for the rest of the game. Newtown scored on a power play goal but AJ Bucktooth added a man down goal to keep the home team within one at 9 to 10. But with the extra attacker the Newtown man up capitalized again to end the scoring at 11 to 9.
Up next is Game 3 at Newtown on Sunday, August 4th at 4pm.
