The Onondaga Redhawks traveled out to Niagara to close out the 2005 regular season. There they found the Hawks ready to defend their turf. Former Onondaga Redhawk player and coach, 1999 Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee, 2 time winner of MILL championships, 2 time winner of the Mann Cup, and 2 time winner of the Presidents Cup Barry Powless suited up for the hosting Niagara Hawks! Barry didn’t disappoint the home crowd as he opened up the scoring with an all too familiar blast from the outside. Another Hawk goal gave the hosts a 2-0 lead as their goal-tender stymied the Redhawks attackers.
The second period saw Redhawk goaltender Jeff Powless and his cross checking defense take over holding the home team scoreless of the first 18 minutes of the game. The Redhawks went on a three goal spurt of their own beginning with a goal by Dave Stout, followed by a Brett Bucktooth tally to tie the game, then Neal Powless with 2 minutes left scored to take the first Redhawk lead. But with 70 seconds to play, the home team scored to tie the game at 3. Then with only 30 seconds left in the second period, regained the lead again 4-3.
The first goal of the hard checking third period was a key to the win. A Niagara goal would give them a two goal lead with a hot goaltender. But midway through the third period, Ed Shenandoah was able to tie the score at 4 a piece. Then at the 8 minute mark, the Hawks took the lead again 5-4. In the next minute, JD Jones was able to race through to score an unassisted goal to knot the game at 5 before Neal Powless was able to tally the game winner off of a feed from Mike Abrams. The last 6 minutes of the game saw heavy checks and steady goaltending as the Redhawks were able to secure a road win 6-5.
The Redhawks were lead by Neal Powless (2g, 1a), Brett Bucktooth (1g, 1a), Gewas Schindler (0g, 2a), JD Jones (1g, 0a), Ed Shenandoah (1g, 0a), Dave Stout (1g, 0a), and adding an assist were Brandy Gibson, Mike Abrams, and Dwayne Porter. Up next is playoff action on Friday July 22nd versus the Tonawanda Pinewoods winner.
