This summer the Onondaga Nation had three participants entered in this years “Empire State Games”. The sporting event was held from July 29th-July 31st at Poughkeepsie, New York. Jeremy and Hainah Thompson were team members on the Central NY Scholastic Lacrosse team. Shirley Hill was a participant in the Central NY Masters Track & Field events.
Jeremy and Hainah came home with the Silver Medal. They both played great, Jeremy played Attack/Midfield while Hainah played Midfield. Like most brothers Jeremy and Hainah play well together. They are always looking to pass to each other, but if their not open, then they’ll find the next open player. Both brothers play unselfish lacrosse, and are quick to get down the field on transition.
The Gold Medal was to be determined when Long Island and Central met in round robin play. In a low scoring, hard checking game, Long Island came out on top with a score of 5-3. In that game Jeremy had 1 goal and 1 assist. After the 5 game tournament, Jeremy accumulated 8 goals – 2 assists and Hainah finished with 3 goals – 2 assists.
Both will enter their senior year at LaFayette High School this Fall, and hope to bring another State Championship home. But with that game a long ways down the road, next June, the brothers will concentrate on the books as they look to enter college around this time next Fall. Good Luck and Congratulations to both Jeremy and Hainah on their future endeavors!
Shirley had always had a strong interest in the sport of Track & Field, but never really pursued participating in it until two months ago after a friend encouraged her to tryout. Her friend thought that she’d do okay and told her that the qualifiers were in June.
After qualifying, she sent her application in and was on her way to Poughkeepsie, NY. Thanks to the encouragement of her friend, and through her determination and physical efforts, Shirley brought home two medals. A Silver Medal in the discus event, and a Gold Medal in the Javelin event. Congratulations – way to go!
