The Onondaga Pee Wees defeated over Newtown 12-3 to win championship. The Redhawks and the Golden Eagles earned the right to play each other with the best overall regular season record. The regular season saw exciting matches between these two squads.
The Redhawks were very excited entering the Championship game. Head Coach Ed Cathers had his team game out running, passing and scoring right after the opening whistle. That spirit lead to the first Redhawk goal in the opening seconds, by Mason Rockwell, to start off the scoring while Orris Edwards closed out the first period scoring to a 5 to 1 first period score.
The second period saw the Newtown Pee Wees make a run at the Redhawks by scoring 2 goals while Cree Cathers tossed in a goal of his own to close out the second period with a 6-3 lead.
The third period saw the Redhawk goal-tender Edmund Cathers step up to all Newtown challengers and didn’t allow a goal in the third period. Assistant Coach Jake Edwards said of the effort, “Everyone played like champion. They were very impressive.”
With Edmund stopping all shots and the defense keeping the crease clear of Newtown attackers, the offense was able to pressure the Newtown goal-tender. Troy Benedict, Cameron Simpson, and Holton Pierce started the third period scoring leading to 6 third period goals and an Onondaga Championship.
Helping the Onondaga Redhawks hoist up the Championship trophy were: Orris Edwards (3-2), Holton Pierce (3-1), Mason Rockwell (2-0), Nick Silkworth (1-1), Conner Lyons (0-2), Troy Benedict (1-0), Cree Cathers (0-1), Cameron Simpson (0-1), AJ Pritchard (0-1), Matt Thorpe (0-1), and Zach Stevenson (0-1). Congratulations to all of the Redhawks!
