The Onondaga Redhawks earned a season series sweep of the Newtown Golden Eagle last Saturday with a 13-11 win. The win improved the Redhawks to a 7-2 record.
For the Redhawks, the first period was the difference in this matchup. The Redhawks scored 9 goals and held the visitors to 5 tallies of their own. Redhawk Troy Benedict received an assist from Bill O’Brien just 13 seconds into the game for an early 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles bounced back with 2 tallies before the Redhawks went on a rally of their own. Scores by Matt Bennett, Kori Halftown, Leroy Halftown and Cam Simpson made it 5-2. Newtown again closed the gap with 2 goals of their own before Troy added his second of the period followed by a Cree Cathers tally, another Kori tally and Matt Noble extending the lead to 9-4. Newtown was then able to score one last tally before the first period expired with 8 seconds to play to close out the first period play with the Redhawks holding a 9-5 lead.
That was all the cushion the hometown Redhawks needed as they kept the visiting Golden Eagles at bay for the rest of the game.
Leading the Redhawks were Troy Benedict (3-2), Cree Cathers (2-3), Leroy Halftown (1-4), Matt Bennett (1-3) and Cam Simpson (3-0).
