Onondaga traveled to Newtown to a notoriously hostile environment and came away with an 11-9 victory.
These two teams have a history of decades of epic battles, and this past weekend’s contest proved to be no different than the others. It was a physical game filled with hits, fantastic goals, great saves, break-away shots and saves, outside blasts, penalties, man-up goals, man down goals and everything else you would expect from two rival teams.
In the end, the specialty teams would prove to be the difference as Onondaga had 53 shots on goal, 6 man-down goals, 4 of which were break-away goals. Newtown was able to hold the Redhawks to just 1 for 6 on man-up situations which was anchored by quality goalie play.
Onondaga also got great goaltending from Ross Bucktooth. His stellar play in the nets and intense pressure from the entire Redhawk defense allowed the opportunity for a lot of quality fast break opportunities. Scoring went back and forth through most of the whole game, but Ross and the Redhawks proved to be too much, as they broke open a commanding 3 goal lead in the middle of the 3rd period that proved to be the difference. A late goal with only a few seconds left closed out the scoring with a final, 9-11 in Onondaga’s favor. Onondaga’s record is now 4-1 and host 3rd place Rochester Grey Wolves on Friday night.
