The second day of the President’s Cup saw Onondaga and Tri-City both play their second game of the day. Tri-City earlier in the day earned an overtime win over Owen Sound which set up an important early matchup between the two unbeaten teams.
The Redhawks started quickly. Brett Bucktooth took the ball down low on the left side and powered his way to the goal and beat the Tri-City goal tender with a behind the back goal for a 1-0 Redhawk lead. Then a few possessions later, Brett did it again. Complete with another backhand goal and a 2-0 Onondaga lead. After a Tri-City tally, Andy Spack stole the ball at the faceoff circle and raced down to beat the goal tender for a 3-1 lead. While the defense of the Redhawks kept the Bandits from scoring for the rest of the period, long possessions allowed for multiple shot opportunities which AJ Bucktooth and Dustin Hill cashed in for a 5-1 lead.
The second period saw the Bandits come out with a renewed sense of urgency. After scoring a power play goal to bring the score 5-2, the Tri-City shooters were able to add two more goals to tighten the game at 5-4. Tyler Hill added a power play goal of his own before the Bandits responded with a fast break goal bringing the score to 6-5. That is when goaltender Ross Bucktooth made save after save. One defensive series saw Ross make three outstanding saves as the Bandits tried to score from close range. With a hot goaltender, the Redhawks scored three goals to close out the period from Dewey Porter, Wade Bucktooth, and a beautiful fast break goal by Ron Cogan with an assist to Dustin Hill and a 9-5 lead.
Onondaga continued to pressure the Tri-City as the Bandits made a goalie change. Jeremy Thompson tested the new net minder with an outside blast which found the back of the cage. Wade Bucktooth followed with a goal to bring the lead to 11-5. As Brett Bucktooth took the ball behind the cage, the Bandit goalie tried to follow the Redhawk cutters only to miss the pass to Wade on the crease as he tallied his third goal of the game and a 12-5 lead. With 6 minutes to play, Tri-City pulled their goalie for an extra attacker to add another tally while Redhawk Murray Stout added an empty net goal to close out the scoring at 13-7.
For his play, goaltender Ross Bucktooth was named Player of the Game. Up next for the Redhawks is the undefeated Kahnawake Mohawks at 4:30 on Wednesday August 18, 2010.
