The Can-Am semi-finals heated up this weekend as defending Can-Am Champions the Onondaga Redhawks faced the 2011 top seed Newtown Golden Eagles.
Friday saw the series open at Cattaraugus as Newtown hosted the Redhawks. The series saw the Redhawks take early heads in both the first and second period. The third period saw Onondaga build a 8-6 lead. Unfortunately the visitors could not hold the lead as Newtown scored 2 goals in 10 seconds the final 2 minutes to secure a 9-8 win in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
Saturday the series shifted back to Onondaga. Tonight was a night for the goaltenders as both keepers kept the shots at bay. The game came down to an exciting final period and a few calls that went Newtown’s way enabling them to earn a 5-4 win.
Sunday, the Redhawks had to travel back to Cattaraugus facing elimination. But the defending champions were not going away quietly. The Redhawks scored quickly and often as they won their first game of the series 18-13.
Friday, July 29th the series continues with game 4 at Onondaga at 8 pm. If necessary, Game 5 will be at Newtown (Gil Lay) on Saturday, July 30th at 7pm.
Also, this weekend the NAMLA minor lacrosse championships take place on Saturday, July 30. All games are at Onondaga and begin at 10 am and continue throughout the day.
