Game 2 of the Presidents Cup saw two recent Presidents Cup champions battle with the host team St. Catharines Saints coming out on top 13-7.
The “Jack” is the site of the 2015 Cup and the matchup between the two teams was scheduled for an 8pm start. Sometimes these old barns are more equipped for the winter than hot humid days of late summer. It seemed before all of the fans were able to file out of the air conditioned lobby, the Saints took advantage of every opportunity and raced out to a 5-0 lead. Coach Ed Shenandoah switched netminders from Ross Bucktooth to Edmund Cathers and immediately afterward Pete Benedict scored the Redhawks first goal followed seconds later when Jeremy Thomson took the draw and raced down to score. The Benedict scored again to make it 5-3. That would be the closest the Redhawks would come as the Saints extended the lead to 7-3 before Hunter Hemlock scored to close out the period making it 7-4. The second period saw both goalies settle in and make quality saves. But it was the Saints night as they scored three straight goals before Benedict responded with a power play blast from the top making the score 10-5, Saints. The final period saw more of the same. The Saints tallied 3 more goals to the Redhawks 2. The last goal was a nifty fast break goal by defenseman Trevor Clark making the final score 13-7. The Redhawks close out pool play with a 1pm game against the Pirateers from Nova Scotia.
