The Onondaga Redhawks resumed the series with Newtown after the death of Chief Isaacs at Cattaragus. Friday night’s Game 3 saw an excellent game between the two squads. It was a see-saw battle throughout as the first and second periods ended tied, 3-3 and 7-7. The beginning of the third saw Newtown score three quick goals in the opening minutes of the third. That was enough to secure a win and hold a 2-1 game lead.
Game 4 at Cattaragus was also an excellent game. Before the game started, Redhawk Neal Powless was awarded the Can-Am Keith White Sportsman of the year award. Newtown started the first peiod with a rash of penalties which the Redhawk power play capitalized and at the end of the first, the Redhawks held an 6-2 lead. The second period saw the Redhawks accumulate penalties of their own which ignited a Newtown rally. By the end of the second period, Newtown held a 10-8 lead. The third period saw The Redhawks fight back to close the gap to 11-12. With 15 seconds to play, the Redhawks pulled goaltender Jim Campbell for the extra attacker. After a furry in front of the net, Neal Powless was able to secure the loose ball and beat the Newtown goalie to send the game into overtime with 4 seconds to play. The first overtime session saw the Redhawks score first with a goal by Ron Cogan and then a beautiful backhand goal by Art Powless only to see the hosts tie the game. The second overtime saw the Redhawks gain possession first only to get an outside shot. Newtown then pushed the ball down the floor and shot. Goaltender Jim Campbell made the initial save but the ball ever so slowly rolled across the line for the final score and Newtown holding a 3 games to 1 lead.
Game 5 at Onondaga saw two tired and exhausted teams play each other for a third day in a row. The Newtown special teams proved to be the difference as their man down unit was able to stop the Redhawk powerplay the entire game. In the end, Newtown came away with a 9-6 victory and a 4-1 series win. The Redhawks congratulate Newtown and send them good luck as they play for the President’s Cup in Owen Sound.
