Redhawks split Weekend Action

May 18, 2010 By Redhawks Lax

On Saturday May 15th, the Redhawks welcomed the Tonawanda with a 18-3 win but lost Sunday to the Niagara Hawks 9-7.

The Tonawanda Braves traveled to Tsha’Honnonyendakwha on the Onondaga Nation. The Redhawks came away with a 18-3 win. In the first period the Redhawks knew the bounces were on their side with a goal by goaltender Ross Bucktooth. After Ross made a save, Ross tried to hit a streaking Redhawk but the pass was out of reach, and bounced passed the Tonawanda keeper for a goal. By the end of the period, the Redhawks built a 7-2 lead.

The second period and third period saw the Redhawks continue to build on their lead while Junior Bucktooth relieved his older brother of the goal tending duties. Defenseman Junior Bucktooth last tended goal in minor lacrosse at the Tyke level, according to their father, Kevin Bucktooth. Junior held the shooters scoreless in the second period and only allowed a goal late in the third and final period.

The Redhawks looked ready to head west to Niagara for their first away game of the 2010 season. The Onondaga Redhawks were to play the Hawks, which was a replay of last year’s 2009 Can-Am Championship.

Niagara opened the scoring and continued to take control of the game by scoring the first 4 goals of the game. Wade bucktooth finally opened the scoring for the Redhawks on a dodge from the left side. The game began to heat up the same way last year’s games ended which resulted in some penalties. The Redhawks were able to capitalize on these opportunities as Wade would score 2 more goals in the first period both on man-up situations to close out the scoring for the first period.

Tempers would continue to fly through the second period and the Redhawks found themselves killing off a multitude of penalties.  They were able to effectively kill off one penalty, but the second consecutive penalty proved to be too much for the Redhawks, and they gave up another goal. Niagara and the Redhawks then exchanged goals to close out the second period with a score of 6-4.

The Redhawks came out to start the third period fired up, and proved it by scoring 2 goals in the first minute and a half, one of them being another man-up goal to tie the game at 6. The pace of the game picked up a notch higher and the Hawks of Niagara broke the tie with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. A few minutes later Onondaga tied it back up 7 on another man-up goal. But with just a few minutes left, Niagara was able to score the go-ahead goal and a few moments later a security goal with 1 minute left for a 9-7 victory over the Redhawks.

Up next for the Redhawks is another hard road test as they travel to Gil Lay Arena to play the Newtown Golden Eagles on May 22nd.
