Game 1
The Onondaga Redhawks took the first game of the seven game series against Newtown 11-9. The game was a close contest throughout as Newtown scored first but was answered quickly by a goal by AJ Bucktooth. Then Dustin Hill and Vern Abrams combined on a fast break goal to give the hosts a lead. But the first period saw Newtown capitalize on power play goals to end the period tied at 4.
The second period saw Newtown take an early lead in the opening seconds of play. The Redhawk goaltender Jim Campbell was able to shut down the Newtown attack for over an 18 minute span. Meanwhile Kevin Powless was able to put in to outside blasts before Eric Carlsen scored on a man down goal with only seven seconds to play. That goal gave the Redhawks a 7-6 second period lead.
The final period saw Newtown strike first and tie the game at 7. Captain Ed Shenandoah responded with a goal of his own. Again Newtown tied the game before Brandy Gibson took the ball the length of the floor to break the tie. Moments later, Neal Powless took breakout pass from Ron Cogan and scored on a fast break of his own. Newtown then pulled the goal tender for the extra attacker and scored with under a minute to play. But Eric Carlsen was able to battle for the loose ball and score to seal the victory.
