The 2010 Presidents Cup opened with an 11-8 win over host team the Burnaby Burrards. This event showcasing 7 championship teams from across 7 different men’s leagues.
The first 3 minutes of the game saw both goaltenders keep the game scoreless with many quality saves. At the 3 minute mark, Onondaga goaltender Ross Bucktooth made a save that ended up in defender Andy Spack’ stick. Andy raced down the floor beating the Burrard goaltender low for the first goal of the game. After a goal by the home team, Jeremy Thompson scored the first of his three goals with a beautiful pass from Dave Stout. After the home team it up at 2, Jeremy beat two defenders to feed Brett Bucktooth for a beautiful goal with 2 minutes remaining in the period. The Redhawks continued to pressure the home team with quality shots when Redhawk Dewey Porter picked up a rebound by veteran Neal Powless for another tally with 0.7 seconds left in the opening period and a 4-2 lead and Redhawk momentum.
The second period saw the home team rebound with a tally of their own to close within 1. Wade Bucktooth then scored on a nice feed from Tyler Hill to bring extend the lead back to 5-3. Despite the Redhawks controlling the action, the Burnaby goaltender stopped numerous Redhawk chances before his attackers scored twice to tie the score at 5. Then Neal Powless tallied on a pretty power play which everyone touched the ball. As the second period as nearing a close, the home team tied it a 6 before Jeremy Thompson scooped up a loose ball and beat his man and the goaltender for a 7-6 lead to close the second period with 47 seconds left.
The final period saw the Burrards score on their opening possession to tie it at 7. Then constant Redhawk pressure began to wear down the Burrard goalie as Dustin Hill, Brett Bucktooth and Neal Powless all scored on beautiful multiple pass possessions to extend the lead to 10-7. Redhawk goaltender Ross continued to stymie the Burrard offence as the home team pulled the goalie for 6 attackers for the last 4 minutes of play. After a final goal by the home team, Jeremy Thompson scored the final tally in the closing seconds on his way in earning Player of the Game honors.
