In 2010 the Onondaga Redhawks did what no other Onondaga team has done before, won a Canadian lacrosse championship.
Onondaga elder and 2003 Lacrosse Hall of Fame Inductee Irving Powless Sr. recalls seasons of not winning any games and seasons where Onondaga couldn’t be beat since the Onondagas began playing box lacrosse in the 1930’s after being banned from field lacrosse for having ‘professional lacrosse players’.
In the 70’s, the Onondagas were on one of those undefeated streaks. Lead by players such as Ade Shenandoah, Barry Powless, Bossy Bucktooth, and Mike Cornelius, the Onondaga team, then named the Syracuse Warriors, played for the Presidents’ Cup but were unable to bring the trophy home.
So congratulations to the men on the 2010 Onondaga Redhawks for winning our first Canadian lacrosse championship.
